42m SERMAC Concrete Pumping at North Gare
- Location: North Gare, Hartlepool, Teesside
- Pump used: 42m SERMAC 5Z42 Concrete Boom Pump
- Type of project: Coastal Defence Concrete Repairs
Project introduction
Our 42m SERMAC concrete boom pump was out at North Gare on the Teesside coast, helping with concrete repairs to the coastal defences at the mouth of the River Tees.
With the North Sea stretching out around the site and the pump positioned along the breakwater, it was certainly a different setting from the building sites we're used to.
This was one of those jobs where having the right reach made all the difference.
What the job involved
The work involved pumping concrete into sections of the coastal structure being repaired.
As the photographs show, parts of the existing concrete had been broken away, with steel reinforcement installed ready for the new concrete.
Our 42m SERMAC boom pump was used to deliver concrete directly into the prepared areas, including sections close to the water's edge.
The pump's long boom allowed the concrete to reach the working areas from its position on the breakwater, without needing to move the truck closer to the damaged sections.
The challenge
Working right beside the North Sea brings a few challenges you wouldn't normally find on a building site.
The breakwater was exposed, the ground around the repair areas was uneven and there was very little room to work close to the water.
Getting concrete into the right places was the important part. The pump needed to remain on suitable ground while the boom reached across the damaged sections and down towards the reinforcement.
It's exactly the sort of situation where the reach of a larger concrete boom pump comes into its own.
How Bailey Concrete Pumping helped
For this job, we used our 42m SERMAC 5Z42 concrete boom pump, one of the largest pumps in the Bailey fleet.
With the truck set up on the breakwater and its stabilisers in position, the five-section boom could be extended out over the coastal structure.
Concrete was pumped through the boom and delivered down to the areas being repaired, with the delivery hose positioned by the team working below.
Having that reach meant the concrete could be placed where it was needed, despite the difficult access around the sea defences.
The result
The 42m SERMAC allowed concrete to be delivered to the prepared repair areas along the breakwater without needing to bring the truck onto the damaged sections.
It's not every day you see one of our concrete pumps working with the North Sea on either side, and the photographs really capture the scale of the job.
Another interesting project for the Bailey team and a great example of how concrete pumping can help on coastal engineering work as well as more familiar construction sites.
Additional project details
Our 42m SERMAC 5Z42 has a five-section folding boom, making it a useful option for larger concrete pours and projects where additional reach is needed.
Bailey Concrete Pumping operates a fleet of six concrete boom pumps ranging from 20m to 42m.
We provide concrete pump hire throughout Middlesbrough, Teesside, Hartlepool, Redcar and Cleveland, Durham and the wider North East, working on everything from domestic foundations to commercial construction and specialist projects like this one.
